BROWNWOOD, TX — Two teenagers have been arrested after being involved in a shooting near Gordon Wood Stadium over the weekend.
The Brownwood Police Department has released information about a shooting that occurred near the Brownwood Aquatic Center and Gordon Wood Stadium where two 17-year-olds, Nevan Egger and Jacob Lopez, were arrested.
The press releases stated that on July 12, 2026, around 4:14 a.m., officers with the Brownwood PD were dispatched to the 3200 block of Milam Drive in reference to a weapons offense.
Reports stated that vehicles described as a gold Chevy extended cab pickup and a black Chevy Equinox appeared to be chasing each other and firing shots near the Brownwood Aquatic Center.
At the time of the incident, multiple players and families were participating in the annual Midnight Madness youth softball tournament at the nearby Bert V. Massey II Sports Complex (located in the 3200 block of Milam Drive). The shooting incident was not related to the tournament and occurred only in close proximity to the complex.
As a precaution, tournament officials elected to cancel the remainder of the event out of concern for the safety of participants, families and spectators.
According to the caller, some attendees sought shelter in nearby restrooms after hearing gunfire in the area.
Officers arrived and contacted witnesses, who reported observing a gold Chevrolet extended cab pickup and a dark-colored SUV performing burnouts and donuts in the parking lot on the west side of Gordon Wood Stadium. Witnesses stated they heard multiple gunshots before both vehicles fled eastbound.
While officers were investigating the incident, Brownwood police dispatch received another report of shots fired in the 1800 block of Avenue K. Responding officers located two vehicles in the 1000 block of Roselawn Drive that matched the descriptions of the vehicles involved in the shooting on Milam Drive.
Officers quickly located and identified the individuals involved in this incident. The individuals associated with the pickup were determined to be under 21 years of age. Brownwood police officers established probable cause to search the pickup and located alcoholic beverages, a stolen 9mm handgun, and a fired 9mm cartridge inside the pickup.
As a result of the investigation, officers developed probable cause from evidence and statements to arrest Egger for theft of a firearm and possession of alcohol by a minor, and Lopez for deadly conduct – discharge of a firearm and possession of alcohol by a minor.
Brownwood PD stated it was grateful that no one was injured and extended its concern to the children, parents, coaches and spectators who were affected by this reckless and dangerous act.
Brownwood PD also thanked the witnesses who remained on scene and provided valuable information and video evidence that assisted officers in quickly identifying those involved.
This investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges and arrests are possible.
