To mitigate these risks, the NFPA emphasizes the importance of maintaining a three-foot safety zone around heating equipment such as furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves, and portable space heaters.

• Establishing a "Kid-free zone": Maintain a three-foot radius around open fires and space heaters to ensure the safety of children.
• Avoiding unconventional heating methods: Never use an oven as a source of heat for your home.
• Professional installation: Have qualified professionals install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters, or central heating systems to ensure proper setup and reduce risks.
• Regular maintenance: Schedule annual cleaning and inspections of heating equipment and chimneys by qualified professionals to identify and address potential hazards.
• Vigilant portable heater use: Turn off portable heaters when leaving the room or going to bed to prevent accidents and conserve energy.
