Atmos Energy Urges Residents to be Cautious with Heating During Winter Storm

SAN ANGELO, Texas – In anticipation of an approaching Arctic cold front set to bring severe winter conditions to West Texas in the coming days, Atmos Energy is actively monitoring the weather and strategically deploying our workforce across our system.

The plummeting temperatures may impact natural gas usage, prompting Atmos Energy to offer valuable tips for conserving energy and ensuring safety during this extreme weather:

  • Avoid unconventional heating methods: Never use an oven or a gas stovetop as a heat source for your home.

  • Protect natural gas meters: While natural gas meters are weather-proof, ensure their smooth operation by removing snow and ice with a broom or brush. Avoid using hard objects to kick or chip away snow and ice. For meter concerns, contact Atmos Energy's Emergency Number at 866.322.8667.

  • Clear external vents: Ensure vents for dryers and other natural gas equipment remain unobstructed to prevent dangerous carbon monoxide buildup. For venting queries, consult a licensed plumber or qualified contractor.

  • Prevent frozen pipes: Leave faucets running at a trickle, keep cabinet doors open, and seal doors and windows to retain heat.

  • Optimize thermostat settings: Save both money and energy by setting your thermostat to 68 degrees during the day and 58 degrees when away from home (where safe to do so).

  • Act swiftly on gas odors: If you detect a gas smell, evacuate the area immediately, call 911, and contact Atmos Energy's emergency number at 866.322.8667 from a safe distance.

These recommendations and additional information can be found on our Storm Center page at atmosenergy.com.
