SAN ANGELO, TX — A moderate heat risk will affect portions of West Central Texas on Wednesday and Thursday as temperatures climb into the low to mid-100s and heat indices reach 105 to 110 degrees amid high humidity, the National Weather Service reported.
Very hot and humid conditions are expected across the Big Country, Concho Valley and Heartland on Wednesday, expanding to most of West Central Texas on Thursday. Highs are forecast to reach near 105 degrees from Abilene to San Angelo, with similar readings in other western areas. Eastern locations near Brownwood and Brady will see temperatures very near 100 degrees, but elevated humidity will push heat index values to near 110 in both regions.
The National Weather Service forecast shows specific highs of 101 degrees Wednesday and 103 on Thursday in Abilene; 100 and 106 in San Angelo; 106 and 107 in Sweetwater; and 105 and 103 in Haskell. The oppressive conditions are expected to be short-lived.
A chance of storms and somewhat cooler temperatures is forecast to return Friday. Precipitation probabilities will rise later in the week, with scattered showers and thunderstorms possible into the weekend.
The National Weather Service urged residents to follow heat safety guidelines. People should drink plenty of water before feeling thirsty, take frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and shift strenuous outdoor activities to cooler parts of the day. Those most at risk include the elderly, young children, and anyone without access to cooling or adequate hydration.
