UPDATE: Suspect in Standoff Dies From Self-Inflicted Gunshot

SAN ANGELO, TX — A lengthy police standoff ended about 3 p.m. Monday when the suspect was brought out of a residence on a stretcher by law enforcement.

He was later pronounced deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the San Angelo Police Department.

Law enforcement was involved in a standoff with the man near the intersection of Shady Hill Drive and Canyon Rim Drive in the southwest part of San Angelo.

The man was 43 years old and was a suspect in a family violence incident that involved a firearm, according to Police Chief Travis Griffith when he briefed the media at about 12:45 p.m.

The suspect had allegedly threatened to kill his wife and then take his own life, police said. His wife was able to safely leave the residence without injury.

Due to the suspect's "history of escalating behavior and information obtained from related investigations," officers secured the area while an arrest warrant was sought.

The incident prompted Lamar Elementary to be placed on its secure protocol due to the police activity in the neighborhood.

There were numerous law enforcement officers and vehicles across the street from the school while they mobilized to surround the house.

After a couple hours of negotiations were unable to bring the situation to an end, law enforcement heard gunshots from inside the residence, according to police.

The SWAT team then brought out a battering ram and entered the home.

When the man was brought out being carried on a stretcher by six SWAT officers, he was loaded into an ambulance, and law enforcement began to leave the scene.

Witnesses in the area said it appeared police were able to get two older people out of the residence earlier in the standoff.
