SAN ANGELO, TX — San Angelo Mayor Tom Thompson released a video message urging residents to prepare for extreme cold temperatures expected to impact the area this weekend, with freezing conditions potentially lasting up to three days.
In the message posted on the City of San Angelo's official Facebook page, Mayor Thompson said that "a little preparation now can make a big difference."
Key safety recommendations from the mayor include:
Limit time outdoors and dress in layers, including hats and gloves.
Check on elderly neighbors and anyone who may need extra help — cold weather can be dangerous, not just uncomfortable.
To prevent pipe damage in homes:
Drip faucets, open cabinet doors under sinks, and cover outdoor faucets.
Know the location of your main water shut-off valve.
Additional critical precautions:
Never use grills, ovens, or generators indoors due to deadly carbon monoxide risks.
Prepare for possible power outages: Use flashlights instead of candles, keep phones charged, and have extra blankets ready.
Stock three days of drinking water.
Bring pets indoors and provide shelter for livestock.
Avoid unnecessary travel, especially on bridges and overpasses, due to potential ice.
"Prepare now, look out for one another, and together we'll get through this safely," the mayor said.
