SAN ANGELO, TX — Several San Angelo City Council members and Mayor Tom Thompson released individual statements Friday responding to recent recall petitions, emphasizing their commitment to public service, accountability and fact-based decision-making.
Council Member Joe Self, District 2, said citizens have the right to voice concerns and participate in the democratic process.
“Serving on City Council is a responsibility that comes with both support and criticism,” Self stated in the statement. “My focus remains on the work ahead of us. Decisions must be guided by facts, fairness and what is in the best interest of the entire community. While public disagreement is part of leadership, it should never distract from the responsibility to address challenges, pursue opportunities and make thoughtful decisions for the future. I remain committed to serving this community, listening to its citizens and continuing the work necessary to move us forward."

Council Member Harry Thomas, District 3, highlighted his 10 years of service and the importance of listening to different perspectives while keeping the city’s long-term interests at the center of decisions.
“I recognize and respect that residents have the right to question their elected officials and use the processes available to them,” Thomas stated. “Public accountability is an important part of local government, and I take that responsibility seriously. … My priority remains the same: to continue focusing on the issues before the city, to evaluate decisions based on facts and fairness, and to serve in a way that reflects the needs of the community as a whole.”
Mayor Tom Thompson noted that public service invites scrutiny and that elected officials should expect to be questioned.
“Honest criticism is part of the democratic process,” Thompson stated. “At the same time, public discussion should remain grounded in facts, credible information and the full context of the issues before our city. Local government has a responsibility to make decisions consistently, fairly and in the best interest of all residents. Leadership is not always about choosing the easiest or most popular path. It is about making responsible decisions, even when they are difficult. My focus remains on serving the citizens of San Angelo, addressing the work before us and helping move our community forward."
