Sweetwater Loses Head Coach

SWEETWATER, TX- Ben McGehee, former head football coach of the Sweetwater Mustangs, took the same position at Magnolia West High School near Houston.

After four seasons with the Mustangs, McGehee announced he will be leaving Sweetwater. McGehee led the Mustangs to three playoff appearances and a 23-21 record over those four seasons.

McGehee took over the Mustang program in 2017 after Sweetwater had a 2016 state championship run.

Sweetwater went 8-2 in 2020 and won a playoff game in the first round against Levelland but lost to Celina the next game.

Before McGehee ended up at Sweetwater, he was an assistant at Abilene Cooper and Brownwood and an offensive coordinator at Temple High School.

The former coach for Magnolia West, Blake Joseph, filled the quarterback coach position at North Texas.

Ben McGehee isn’t the first coach to leave for the Houston area as Brent Davis, SA Central’s former coach, went to Gregory-Portland.
