Texas Rocks Texas Tech to Win First National Softball Title

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — At long last, the Texas Longhorns are the national champions in softball.

After eight World Series appearances - including three trips to the finals the last four years - the Longhorns finally claimed their first title Friday with a 10-4 win over Texas Tech in Game 3 of the championship series.

Texas did it with an offensive performance that’s almost hard to believe.

The Longhorns scored five times in the first inning against the best pitcher in the country, NiJaree Canady.

She had thrown every pitch for Tech in the World Series to that point, but her spectacular run came to an end when she wasn’t sent back out for the second inning.

Texas added another run in the third inning, then put the exclamation point on the title with Mia Scott’s grand slam in the fourth.

Longhorns pitcher Teagan Kavan held Tech scoreless until the Red Raiders broke through with three runs in the fifth and another in the seventh.

Kavan allowed only two earned runs on eight hits to pick up the win.

Texas finished 56-12, while Tech’s breakthrough season ended at 54-14.

The Red Raiders won their first regional title, followed by their first Super Regional title, then came within one win of the national title in their first-ever appearance at the World Series.
