MCCAMEY, TX — Ozona running back Christian Villarreal had a spectacular performance Friday with 371 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in the Lions’ 65-0 season-opening win over McCamey.
If McCamey thought it couldn’t get any worse after Villarreal’s 361-yard, 6-TD performance last season, it somehow did.
That gives the Ozona senior a combined 732 yards and 13 TDs in his last two games against the Badgers.
Villarreal did all of the damage Friday on only 18 carries, averaging nearly 21 yards every time he touched the ball. He also had four two-point conversions.
Quarterback Michael Preddy was 6-of-9 passing for 51 yards, and he added four carries for 75 yards.
Ozona returned nine starters on offense, including all five offensive linemen and Villarreal, from last year’s 7-4 team.
The Lions showed Friday why they’re favored to win their first district title since 2016.
Ozona will play again next week when it hosts Eldorado.
Sonora Shines in Shutout Over Miles
The Sonora Broncos hit the ground running Friday with a dominant 40-0 win over Miles to start the season.
Sonora’s defense not only posted a shutout but scored twice on interceptions by Armani Coronado and Jayden Welborn.
Coronado, who also had a team-high 14 tackles, returned his INT 59 yards for a touchdown, while Welborn had a 35-yard return for a score.
Quarterback Aaron Segura was 12-of-21 passing for 229 yards and two TDs. Angel Diaz and David Luna each caught a score.
Acea Gomez led the Broncos’ ground game with 12 carries for 118 yards and two TDs.
Miles QB Liam Yancy was held to 9-of-23 passing for 96 yards.
Kaden Karmany was the Bulldogs’ top receiver with six catches for 85 yards, while Ryder Satepauhoodle had eight carries for 58 rushing yards.
Sonora will host Johnson City next week, while Miles will visit Sterling City.
Eldorado Tops Christoval in Rivalry Game
The Eldorado Eagles held off Christoval 24-14 in a matchup between the longtime rivals Friday.
Eldorado’s Brason Brock rushed 27 times for 119 yards and a TD, and he also had a TD catch.
JonnieRae Adame was 12-of-29 passing for 193 yards and a TD.
Amare Luna had five catches for 63 yards, while Garrett Walling had four catches for 53 yards.
Luna and Charlie Mac Griffin had interceptions on defense.
For Christoval, the Cougars were led by quarterback Ty Debusk, who had 18 carries for 45 yards and a TD.
He was also 10-of-27 passing for 176 yards and a TD with two INTs.
Kelton Gibbs was his big-play target with three catches for 94 yards. Max Hughes had three catches for 41 yards and a TD.
Christoval will host Ballinger next week, while Eldorado will visit Ozona.
Brady Steamrolls San Antonio YMLA
The Brady Bulldogs rolled to a resounding 60-6 win on the road over San Antonio YMLA on Friday to open their season.
Linebacker Johnny Roque led an outstanding defensive performance with 14 tackles, three tackles for loss, and an interception he returned for a TD.
Sean Jacoby was 4-of-6 passing for 120 yards and a TD with an INT, and he had four carries for 116 yards and three TDs.
Ashton Taylor added four carries for 130 yards and two TDs.
Ethan Bernal had a 70-yard TD catch.
Brady will play at Mason next week.
Junction Runs Over Goldthwaite in Top 25 Battle
The Junction Eagles looked every bit like the No. 12 ranked team in Class 2A Division II with a 40-16 win over No. 17 Goldthwaite on Friday.
Junction went 12-2 last year for the winningest season in program history en route to the state quarterfinals.
Led by returning QB Chasen Doyal, the Eagles are primed for another memorable season down in the Hill Country.
Junction will visit San Saba next week, while Goldthwaite will host Center Point.
Robert Lee Makes Quick Work of Loraine
The Robert Lee Steers blanked Loraine 52-0 by halftime in their season opener Friday.
Robert Lee, ranked No. 15 in 1A Division I, was led by all-state spread back Brenner Sherwood, who was 3-of-3 passing for 75 yards and two TDs. He also had three carries for 43 yards and two TDs, and he was 5-of-5 on PATs.
Noah Gonzales had an interception he returned for a TD, and sophomore Justice Immel had six tackles and a forced fumble in his varsity debut.
Robert Lee will play again when it hosts Garden City next week in a rematch of last year’s game that Garden City won 68-60.
Reagan County Cruises Past Olney
The Reagan County Owls opened their season Thursday with a 47-14 win over Olney.
Some new players took their turns in featured roles, led by quarterback Marquis Vargas, who was 14-of-25 passing for 187 yards and four TDs.
Kaden Galindo had six catches for 96 yards and a TD, while John Hodge had four catches for 56 yards and a TD.
Omrie Johnson and Jason Reyes also had TD catches.
Dominic Johnson had 11 carries for 85 rushing yards and two TDs.
Reagan County forced three turnovers, including an interception by Omrie Johnson and fumble recoveries by Hodge and Drake Aguero.
Reagan County will play again next week when it hosts Grape Creek.
Big Performances Not Enough for Winters Against Frost
Despite some strong statistical performances on offense, Winters wasn't able to keep pace with Frost in a 45-21 loss Thursday.
Quarterback Coy Martinez threw for 212 yards and three TDs on 10-of-19 passing, with all three scores going to Nolan Martinez, who finished with four catches for 143 yards.
Mark Moreno had 15 carries for 72 rushing yards.
The Blizzards will try to bounce back next week when they travel to Munday.
Sterling City Overwhelmed by Odessa Compass
The Sterling City Eagles began their season with a 49-7 loss to Odessa Compass Academy on Friday.
This is perhaps Sterling City's final season of 11-man football before returning to the six-man game after four years away.
The Eagles have made the playoffs each of their previous three years in 11-man.
Wrace Blackwelder, who had 53 rushing yards, scored the team's only TD on a 4-yarder in the third quarter.
Sterling City will play again next week when it hosts Miles.
Grape Creek Falls Short Against San Saba
GRAPE CREEK, TX — The Grape Creek Eagles dropped their season opener 27-12 at home against San Saba on Friday.
Darrell West had eight carries for 117 rushing yards and a TD. Anthony Saavedra had 10 carries for 45 yards.
Sire Garcia, a 1,200-yard rusher last season, was held to eight yards and a TD.
Defensively, Ashton Ortiz and Gabe Santillan each had 10 tackles. Hayden Simpson had eight tackles, two tackles for loss, and a sack.
Grape Creek will play again next week when it travels to Reagan County.
Menard Takes Care of Business Against Blanket
The Menard Yellow Jackets opened their season with a 57-25 win over Blanket.
Menard is ranked No. 19 in Class 1A Division I, while Blanket is ranked No. 21 in 1A Division II.
Menard was led by Cado Bannowsky, who had 10.5 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and a sack.
Jayden Payton had 10 carries for 65 rushing yards and a TD, along with two catches for 72 yards and a TD.
Wesley Compton had five carries for 74 yards and two TDs.
Quarterback Eli Weatherly was 3-of-6 passing for 61 yards and a TD.
Zeke Hernandez had an interception on defense, and Ashton Martin forced a fumble.
Menard will travel to play Rochelle next week.
No. 15 Blackwell Upset by Aspermont
The No. 15-ranked Blackwell Hornets were handed a 72-24 loss by unranked Aspermont to start their season.
Kreed Cummings was a bright spot with 11 carries for 160 rushing yards and two TDs.
Blackwell will host Zephyr next week.
