SAN ANGELO, TX— The Lake View Chiefs are flying high as they are off to a 2-0 start and now face the 0-2 Lamesa Golden Tornadoes.
The last time the Lake View Chiefs went 3-0 to start off the season was in 2019, and the last time Lamesa beat the Pride of the Northside was in 2021 when the Golden Tornadoes edged out a win, 26-20.
Can the Lake View Chiefs go 3-0 again?
The Chiefs are having a great season behind the arm of senior quarterback Chris Alvizo. They returned nine starters on offense, and all that experience shows as they’ve put up an average of 45.5 points per game. Lake View also has a utility belt of weapons for Alvizo to use, be it Izaiah Rios out of the backfield or any combination of receivers in Braylon White, DJ Munoz, Chris Rodela, or Calvin Whitfield.
The menu doesn’t end there as the Chiefs have 13 players not including Alvizo that have either have catches or rushing attempts. Lake View can seemingly attack from anywhere on the field and out of any position.
Defensively, the Chiefs’ Kentrell Johnson is a speed demon, placing fourth at last year’s state track meet in the 200-meter dash. Johnson actually used that speed and explosiveness in the opening game against Fort Stockton when he picked off a pass and took it 95 yards for a touchdown.
If you become too focused on Johnson in the secondary, the Chiefs will send in a war party with players like Issac Monreal, Cristian Esparza, Abram Rivera, Conner Williams, or James Hogeda.
Hear from Head Coach Guevara ahead of the matchup below:
The Pride cannot take the Golden Tornadoes lightly and needs to consider this Lamesa team an “F5”. Sophomore quarterback Daniel Ramos has thrown for 669 yards, eight touchdowns, and one interception in two games. Lamesa only lost to Littlefield in Week 1 by two points (49-47), then to Muleshoe, 32-24.
They also have weapons for Ramos, starting with big-play receiver Cylius McCurley. He has a nose for the end zone as he put up 27 total touchdowns last season. This year already, McCurley has taken eight receptions for 200 yards and four touchdowns. Teams cannot focus solely on McCurley because JD Rubio will make opponents pay. He’s caught 14 passes for 173 yards and crossed the goal line twice this season.
Senior running back Deev Lugo can run and catch with 212 rushing yards and two touchdowns and 140 receiving yards.
While there is only one football to go around, Lamesa has two more receivers who make the most out of their opportunity when given a chance. Sophomore Jadyn Jaramillo has the second-most catches on the team with 9, 93 yards, and one touchdown. Fellow sophomore Ty Martinez has taken five receptions for 63 yards and gotten into the end zone once.
Lake View must bring its A-game to remain perfect on the season.
When the teams met last year in San Angelo, Lake View won a 55-42 shootout.
The Chiefs take on the Lamesa Golden Tornadoes on Friday, Sept. 12, in Lamesa at 7 p.m.
