Cowboys Win in Overtime Behind Kicker's Big Leg

ARLINGTON, TX— Behind the leg of Brandon Aubrey, the Dallas Cowboys beat the New York Giants in Overtime in their home opener.

After losing to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL’s season opener, the Cowboys played their first game at AT&T Stadium against the New York Giants. The division game went into overtime and the Cowboys emerged victorious, 40-37.

The game started off with Giant’s left tackle James Hudson drawing four penalties in six plays on New York’s first drive of the game. Those penalties included two unnecessary roughness penalties and two false starts. He became the first player in NFL history to have four penalties on one drive, and he was benched. In total, the Giants were flagged 14 times and had 160 yards in penalties.

The Giants settled for a field goal to give them the 3-0 lead and added another 3 points in the first quarter to give them the 6-0 lead.

The Cowboys got on the scoreboard in the second quarter when kicker Brandon Aubrey connected on a 51-yard field goal to cut the Giant’s lead, 6-3. New York quarterback Russell Wilson hooked up with Malik Nabers for a 29-yard score then Dak Prescott threw a touchdown pass to KaVontae Turpin to make the score, 13-10.

Two plays into the third quarter, Prescott threw an interception, but the Giants turned the ball over on downs on their next drive. Then, the Cowboys had a 6 play, 90-yard drive that ended with a 30-yard run by Javonte Williams to give Dallas the 17-13 lead.

The Giants settled for another field goal to cut the Cowboys lead to one, 17-16. After, Aubrey connected on a 44-yard field goal to extend the lead by 4, 20-16.

Giant’s rookie running back Cam Skattebo ran in a touchdown on a 1-yard run and the Giants reclaimed the lead, 23-20. Cowboys back up running back Miles Sanders gave the Cowboys the lead again on a 4-yard run, 27-23.

On the next New York drive, Wilson threw a deep pass to Wandale Robinson for a 32-yard touchdown and the Giants took back the lead, 30-27.

Prescott then tossed a 6-yard score to George Pickens and the Cowboys moved took the lead again, 34-30, but New York scored again when Wilson found Nabers on a 48-yard score to give the Giants a 3-point lead, 37-34.

Then, Aubrey took the game to overtime with a 64-yard field goal, tied for third longest in NFL history, to send the game into overtime where Aubrey would hit a 46-yard walk-off field goal that was set up by Cowboys safety Donovan Wilson intercepting Russell Wilson who was targeted Nabers.

Prescott was 38-52 for 361 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception while Russell Wilson was 30-41 for 450 yards, 3 touchdowns, and one interception. Skattebo rushed 11 times for 45 yards and one score to Williams 18 carries for 97 yards and one touchdown as well.

Nabers had himself a game catching 9 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns and CeeDee Lamb was held without a touchdown but had 9 catches for 112 yards. Aubrey was 4/4 on field goals including to send the game to overtime and the walk-off game winner and 4/4 on extra points.

The win also marked the first win of Brian Schottenheimer's career as a head coach in the NFL.

(It is worth noting the Dak Prescott has not lost to the New York Giants since his rookie year in 2016.)

One bad thing came out of this win as Cowboys center Cooper Beebe is expected to miss 6-8 weeks with a high ankle sprain. Backup offensive lineman Brock Hoffman could step into the starting role.

The Cowboys moved to 1-1 on the season and play the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field at 3:30 p.m. next Sunday, September 21, 2025. The 0-2 New York Giants play the 0-2 Kansas City Chiefs at MetLife Stadium the same day at 7:20 p.m.
