Friday Night Rewind: Best Games, Biggest Wins and Top Performers From Last Week

Here are the best games, biggest wins and top performers from last week’s high school football action in West Texas:

Best game: Lake View-Levelland

Lake View suffered its first loss of the season in a 40-33 setback against Levelland, but the Chiefs once again gave their fans an entertaining show. Lake View erased a 20-point deficit late in the third quarter to give itself a chance to tie the game with a last-minute drive. The Chiefs drove from the 8-yard line to Levelland’s 30 with seven seconds left to play. Chris Alvizo’s throw to the end zone on the last play of the game wasn’t able to be hauled in, but the Chiefs continue to show they’re a team to be taken seriously.

Biggest win: Grape Creek

The Eagles had their most impressive win of the season with a 41-0 shutout over Tahoka, a team that beat Grape Creek 35-14 last year. The Eagles are now 3-2 and look like a team that could contend for its first-ever playoff win. Darrell West had his fifth straight 100-yard game to start the year, turning 10 carries into 218 yards and three touchdowns, along with a 73-yard punt return for a TD. Grape Creek will play at TLCA this week before opening district play at Coahoma next week.

Biggest surprise: Ballinger

After losing their starting running back and quarterback for the season before they made it to Week 2, the Ballinger Bearcats have shown their resilience with three wins in their last four games, including last week’s 21-7 win on the road over Stanton. Pierson Nord had 73 rushing yards and two TDs, along with four catches for 76 yards, to lead Ballinger’s offense. After a bye this week, the Bearcats could potentially get Kyson Burleson back for the start of district play next week at home against Bangs. Burleson was a part-time starter at QB last year but suffered a torn ACL during track season. He could be a game-changer for Ballinger as it contends for a playoff spot.

Case for the defense: Wall

The Wall Hawks posted their second shutout of the season in last week’s 35-0 win over Sweetwater. Wall has allowed an average of only six points per game against a slate of opponents that also includes Mason, Brownwood, Jim Ned and Monahans. Levi King had an interception return for a TD to highlight last week’s defensive performance. After a trip to Idalou this week, the Hawks will begin district play at home next week against Merkel.

Strong in defeat: Brady

The Brady Bulldogs got off to a rough start last week and trailed Ingram Moore 30-13 in the third quarter. Brady never went away, however, and rallied to within 37-33 before Ingram Moore was able to escape with the win. Despite the loss, the Bulldogs are still 3-2 heading into their bye week, and they’ll be a contender for the District 5-3A Division II title. They begin district play next week at home against Dublin.
