RICHLAND SPRINGS, TX — New Richland Springs ISD athletic director and head football coach James McIntyre Jr. is reportedly under investigation by the Texas Education Agency for the death of a Rocksprings student last spring.
McIntyre, who was hired by Richland Springs in May, was previously the AD and football coach at Rocksprings this past school year.
On March 8 of this year, a 17-year-old Rocksprings boy, David “Samson” Reyes, died while helping move a wooden telephone pole at the school.
According to investigation reports by the Edwards County Sheriff’s Office — which were obtained by the San Angelo Standard-Times — Reyes was at the school’s track and field area that day practicing the discus throw.
Meanwhile, coaches were trying to find a barrier for the shot put area. McIntyre and another coach suggested using a nearby telephone pole, which weighed 700 pounds.
McIntyre, with the help of three coaches and five students, ages 12 to 16, tried to move the pole about 240 yards.
Despite protests from multiple people about being able to carry it, McIntyre encouraged them to continue, according to the Sheriff’s Office report.
When they eventually decided to drop the pole, it bounced off the ground and hit Reyes in the head, causing him to collapse.
A 911 call was placed at 5:30 p.m., and he was pronounced dead 40 minutes later.
McIntyre, along with one of the former Rocksprings coaches, Adrian Rosales, are both under investigation by the TEA for “direct harm” against students/minors.
Both were placed on administrative leave by Rocksprings ISD and remained on leave through the remainder of their contracts.
Two other coaches that participated, Alfredo Enriquez and Paulette Williams, were also placed on administrative leave and had their contracts terminated.
The Edwards County Sheriff’s Office did not charge anyone with a crime.
Since McIntyre was hired at Richland Springs, Rosales and Williams have each joined him on his coaching staff.
