SAN ANGELO, TX — Here are the best football games, biggest wins and top performers from last week in the Concho Valley and West Texas:
Best game: Ballinger-Brady
These two longtime rivals went back and forth in an exciting game that wasn’t decided until the final drive as Ballinger pulled off a 40-35 win. Ballinger erased a 14-point deficit in the second quarter to take the lead in the third quarter, but the Bearcats had to rally again after falling behind 35-34 in the fourth. Wyatt Clemens threw six touchdown passes, including four to Hunter Kresta, who took the last one 80 yards for the winning score early in the fourth quarter. Kresta then intercepted a pass with about four minutes remaining near the goal line to help seal the win. It was a huge win for Ballinger, which improved to 3-1 and snapped a five-game losing streak against their rivals.
Biggest win: Winters
The Winters Blizzards ended an eight-game losing streak with a 36-24 win over TLCA Abilene. Winters has been battling with a roster of less than 20 healthy players, so this was a much-needed win for the program. Winters had 264 rushing yards, led by 101 from Nolan Martinez, 76 from Caleb Rutherford and 73 from Julian Perez. The Blizzards’ defense forced three turnovers.
Biggest surprise: Robert Lee
The Robert Lee Steers made a statement with a 73-49 win over a Sterling City team that is quickly re-establishing itself as one of our area’s top six-man programs. Robert Lee lost almost everyone from last year’s run to the state quarterfinals, but the Steers are showing they’re still a force. Malachi Wauqua ran for 273 yards and four TDs on 31 carries, and he threw for 113 yards and two TDs on 10-of-17 passing to lead a Robert Lee attack that Sterling City struggled to slow down.
Most impressive win: Water Valley
The Water Valley Wildcats continue to take down one strong opponent after another, this time 72-58 over Klondike. It’s the third straight win over an opponent that is currently ranked in the top 15 in the state by sixmanfootball.com as No. 11 Klondike joins No. 10 Sands and No. 13 Rankin. Branson Lacy put up another sensational stat line with 252 passing yards and three TDs while completing 18 of 22 attempts, and he had 31 carries for 314 yards and seven TDs. Water Valley’s gauntlet continues this week at No. 14 Westbrook.
Case for the defense: Wall
The Wall Hawks are averaging 49.3 points per game during their state-title defense, which has helped propel them to a 4-0 start and the No. 3 ranking in the state in Class 3A Division I. But don’t overlook Wall’s defense, which has held opponents to only 11 points per game the last three weeks, capped by a 51-6 win last week over Ozona. Wall allowed only 8.4 points per game last year, and the Hawks’ defense looks elite once again. They should see a bigger test this week with Midland Greenwood, a state quarterfinalist in 4A D-I last year, coming to town.
Strong in defeat: Veribest
The Veribest Falcons suffered their first loss of the season last week in a 83-63 setback against Blackwell. Despite the loss, Veribest put up a ton of points and didn’t allow Blackwell to run away with the game. The Falcons were led by Lorenzo Hight, who threw for 198 yards and three TDs while adding 199 yards rushing yards and two TDs on 21 carries.
