SAN ANGELO, TX — The Central tennis team is one step closer to a state title.
The Bobcats and Lady Cats continue to make progress in the playoffs after winning their area round matchup over Keller last Friday in Abilene, 11-1.
"We are incredibly excited and proud of this team, and everything they have accomplished so far this season," head coach Brent Abilez said of his team on Monday.
The journey has not been an easy one so far. After graduating several seniors a year ago, the No. 19-ranked Central tennis squad continues to grow and show the results of its hard work.
"After graduating our top five girls and three of our top boys from last year's team, there were plenty of questions about what this season would look like," Abilez continued. "Our answer has been simple; this team showed up. They dug deep, stepped up when needed, worked together, and grinded all season long. Every player has an important role and does whatever it takes to help this team be successful."
That hard work paid off last weekend when Central took down a DFW school. The Bobcats handed Keller an 11-1 loss to move on to the regional quarterfinals, where they will face off with unranked El Paso Coronado and have a great shot at another playoff trophy.
"The Bobcats are ready for El Paso Coronado," Abilez said. "We have made adjustments where needed, continued to work hard on the areas we can improve, and we are ready to compete."
Central takes on Coronado in the regional quarterfinals on Tuesday in Midland at the Bush Tennis Center at 10 a.m.
Coach Abilez said he would love to see even more community support as the Bobcats and Lady Cats continue their playoff journey.
"We are ready to compete, battle and represent San Angelo Central," Abilez concluded.
