SAN ANTONIO, TX — Grammy-winning accordionist and conjunto legend Flaco Jimenez, who helped bring South Texas music to a global stage, has died at age 86, his family announced Thursday night.
Jimenez, a San Antonio native, was surrounded by loved ones when he died, according to a statement shared on social media. The family thanked fans for their support and asked for privacy during this time.
"It is with great sadness that we share tonight the loss of our father, Flaco Jimenez," the family said. "His legacy will live on through his music and all of his fans."
Jimenez had been briefly hospitalized in January but had continued performing into his 80s, including appearances at events like the Tejano Conjunto Festival. Over a decades-long career, he played a central role in popularizing conjunto and Tejano music, collaborating with artists across genres and earning multiple Grammy Awards—including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
News of his death quickly drew an outpouring of condolences and tributes, with more than 850 comments posted within an hour of the family’s announcement on Facebook.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
