SAN ANGELO, TX — Fall officially begins today with the Autumnal Equinox, and Christmas is now just 98 days away. But despite the calendar change, West Central Texas will endure triple-digit heat before a midweek cold front brings storms and relief.
Highs are forecast to reach 100 to 103 degrees Monday and Tuesday across the Big Country and northwest Concho Valley, according to the National Weather Service in San Angelo. Hot, dry conditions will dominate until Tuesday night, when a cold front moves in.
Showers and thunderstorms are possible late Tuesday into Wednesday, with rain chances ranging from 15 to 65 percent depending on location. The weather service says there is a marginal risk of severe storms Tuesday afternoon and evening, bringing the possibility of damaging winds, large hail and frequent lightning.
Behind the front, temperatures will fall into the 80s through Thursday before rebounding into the 90s by the weekend.
The Autumnal Equinox, occurring today, marks the moment the sun crosses Earth’s equator, giving nearly equal day and night lengths across the globe. From here, daylight hours will shorten until the Winter Solstice on Dec. 21.
As of Monday, the countdown to Christmas has also begun in earnest, with 98 days left until the holiday on Dec. 25.
