Child Killed, Two Injured in Rollover Crash Near Bangs

BANGS, TX — An 8-year-old girl was killed and two others injured in a single-vehicle rollover crash early Friday on Farm to Market Road 1849, east of Bangs, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The crash happened around 1:35 a.m. when a 2008 Hyundai Accent driven by 39-year-old Shawn Cleve Ales of Brownwood swerved to avoid a wild animal in the roadway, investigators reported. The vehicle left the road, went into a skid, and overturned.

The 8-year-old passenger was ejected and pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace Ted Perez. Her 9-year-old sister, who was buckled in, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Hendrick Medical Center in Brownwood.

Ales was also transported to Hendrick Medical Center with minor injuries.

DPS investigators said the younger child had unbuckled her seat belt during the trip before the crash occurred.

The posted speed limit in the area is 60 miles per hour. DPS reported that the weather was clear and the road was dry at the time of the crash.
