San Angelo Couple Sentenced in Child Endangerment and Death Case

SAN ANGELO, TX — Two people have pleaded guilty in connection with the 2024 death of a four-year-old child in San Angelo.

Mark Nieves, 44, and Shytel Limuel, 31, pleaded guilty to the first-degree felony of intentionally or knowingly causing serious bodily injury to a child and to endangering a child. Nieves also faced a third-degree felony charge of causing bodily injury to a child.

The case dates back to January 2024, when first responders were called about an unconscious child. The child was taken to Shannon Medical Center but later died. According to investigators, the medical examiner determined the cause of death was hypothermia and found signs of severe malnourishment, neglect, and abuse.

Detectives with the San Angelo Police Department’s Crimes Against Children Unit led the investigation. Authorities said Limuel, the child’s mother, and Nieves, her boyfriend, were arrested by Abilene Police on April 24, 2024, and later indicted.

Limuel pleaded guilty on May 1 and received a 30-year sentence in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, along with a year of confinement in state jail. Nieves pleaded guilty on Oct. 8 and was sentenced to 13 years in prison and over four years in state jail. Both sentences will run concurrently.
