WINTERS, TX — A recent electrofishing survey at Lake Winters showed an abundance of largemouth bass, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
The lake, located about five miles east of the town of Winters, had largemouth bass up to 20 inches, and most of them were in good condition, TPWD stated in a recent Facebook post.
The number of largemouth bass observed was almost double the previous survey.
Abundance of forage fish decreased but was still adequate to support the fishery, as seen in the health of the largemouth bass population.
Electrofishing is the primary method TPWD uses to survey largemouth bass and prey species. A boat-mounted generator puts electricity into the water around the boat, and fish are temporarily stunned and float to the surface.
Each fish is netted before it is measured, weighed and returned to the water. The data collected during the survey informs how TPWD manages its fisheries.
