Texas Tech Coach McGuire Named Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week

LUBBOCK, TX — Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire has been named The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week, the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc. announced Monday, following the No. 8 Red Raiders’ 29-7 victory over No. 7 BYU this past Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium.

The weekly honor recognizes a coach who led his team to a significant win while demonstrating the award’s three core pillars — scholarship, leadership, and integrity.

The victory proved to be one of McGuire's signature wins since he took the position as head coach for Texas Tech. The Red Raiders now sport a 9-1 overall record and are 6-1 in Big 12 play. Texas Tech handed BYU its first loss of the season last Saturday. Texas Tech’s defense was dominant, forcing three turnovers and holding the Cougars to just one fourth-quarter touchdown — the fewest points allowed against a top-10 team since the Red Raiders beat No. 8 Texas A&M, 14-7, in 1995.

"Coach McGuire has instilled a culture of belief, toughness and unity in his program,” said Gary Stokan, Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO and president. “Saturday’s win over a top-10 opponent showcased just how far he’s taken the Texas Tech program and why the Red Raiders are now in position to potentially make their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance."

With the win, Texas Tech remains the only FBS team with multiple victories over top-15 teams in the initial College Football Playoff rankings. The Red Raiders have recorded nine wins by 20 or more points this season, tying the school record and leading the FBS. Tech currently ranks second nationally in average margin of victory (33.2 points), trailing only Utah (36.4).

Now in his fourth season at the helm, McGuire has compiled a 32-17 overall record and guided Texas Tech to its fourth consecutive winning Big 12 season. Since his hire in 2022, the Red Raiders have amassed 22 conference wins, the most in the Big 12 over that span.

“Coach McGuire has turned the Texas Tech football program into both Big 12 and CFP contenders,” said Chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation Jim Terry. “His leadership, energy and commitment to his players, both on and off the field, exemplifies the values of The Dodd Trophy.”

McGuire, who was already on the 2025 Dodd Trophy watch list, will aim to guide the Red Raiders to their seventh 10-win season in program history this Saturday when they host UCF at 2:30 p.m. CT on FOX and the Texas Tech Sports Network.
