Oil Tycoon’s 1920s Mansion Hits Market for $5.1M

FORT WORTH, TX — A historic estate in one of Texas’ wealthiest enclaves has hit the market for $5.1 million. Located at 8 Westover Road, the 8,400-square-foot property was one of the original landmark homes of Westover Hills and is now listed by Ida Duwe-Olsen and Ted Olsen of Compass.

Built in the late 1920s and designed by architect Victor Marr Curtis, the estate was among the first grand residences constructed in the area at a time when Fort Worth’s cattle and oil elites were transforming undeveloped land into an exclusive residential enclave.

The home was purchased in 1930 by oilman and civic leader John E. Farrell, who later became the first mayor of Westover Hills in 1939. Farrell lived in the home, known as Westover Manor, until his death in 1946.

Over the years, the estate has been owned by various prominent oil-connected families, including Clarence Brodie Hyde II. It was last acquired in 2015 by a hedge fund executive and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

The Tudor-style mansion features six bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms, and 19 total rooms. Recent updates include a modern kitchen, spa-style bathrooms, and upgraded systems, while original features like cathedral ceilings, wood beams, and a tiled fountain have been preserved. The property includes a sunroom, a conservatory, a formal library with a wet bar, and attic rooms with stained-glass windows.

Sitting on 1.13 acres, the estate also offers a four-car garage with an apartment above, multiple terraces, and an outbuilding that could serve as a future studio or pool house. The original pool was removed, but the terraced lawns provide space for further development.
