SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Pan American Golf Association awarded $34,000 in scholarships to local high school seniors during a ceremony Tuesday in the showroom of the Jim Bass Ford Dealership.
A total of 34 students from San Angelo and the surrounding area were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the organization.
Founded in 1966, the local chapter of the Pan American Golf Association is one of the most active chapters in the country.
Its fundraiser golf tournament was held for the 42nd time earlier this month at Quicksand Golf Course.
Since 2009 when it began keeping official records, the San Angelo Pan American Golf Association has distributed nearly $400,000 in scholarships.
Chapter President Victor Gutierrez said the organization is the second-largest provider of scholarships in West Texas.
“The future looks bright for the Pan American Golf Association. Not as bright as (the students in this room), but it’s bright,” Gutierrez said.
Nolan Sosa, an assistant vice president at Shannon Health and a 2014 Pan American scholarship recipient, was the guest speaker at the event.
Sosa spoke about how scholarships helped him begin his journey in college and into a career.
“It all started with a single opportunity, just like the one you’ve been given,” Sosa said. “This scholarship is so much more than a financial award. It’s a vote of confidence in your potential. …
“Scholarships may open the door, but it’s your responsibility to walk through that door with purpose, with humility and with drive.”
Scholarships are awarded based on the applicants' academics, school participation, financial needs, community involvement and employment. Students are not required to be a golfer to be eligible.
