Janice Coates Chandler

Janice Coates Chandler passed peacefully on Wednesday, June 23, at the age of 77. She was born in San Angelo, Texas on Christmas Day in 1943 to Louise Stephen Coates and P.H.Coates, Jr. She grew up in Big Lake, TX and graduated from Reagan County High School in 1962. She then attended TCU and Sul Ross State University before completing one Masters Degree in Speech and Language Pathology at Texas Tech University and a second Masters from Texas Women’s University. She served as a speech and language pathologist for over 30 years with SAISD, Big Bend Regional 588 Educational Cooperative, Menard Special Education Cooperative, and Small Schools Cooperative. Jan was an active member of First United Methodist Church in San Angelo, TX and a sustaining member of the San Angelo Junior League, San Angelo Symphony Guild, and the Daughter’s of the American Revolution. In her free time, she loved playing the piano and reading. 

Jan was a wonderful lady with the sweetest and kindest spirit that will be greatly missed. We thank our heavenly Father for blessing our lives with Jan as she was a loving and giving mother, a trusted and loyal friend, and a faithful and devoted servant to Christ. The lives she touched, she made better. One of the many priceless gifts she left was giving many children the help and guidance to find words and learn to communicate. 

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Joy Gumbiner and granddaughter, Anastasia Gumbiner of Santa Fe, NM; brother, Steve Wayne Coates of San Angelo, TX; special speech sisters, Karen Bennie, Martha Elder, and Becky Cantu all of San Angelo, TX and Carolyn Davis of Water Valley, TX; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louise and P.H. Coates, Jr.; brother, P.H. Coates, III; sister, Lucy Jean Harmon; and son, Jay Chandler. 

Serving as pallbearers will be Steve Elliott, Joe Bowers, Bob Daugherty, Fourth Coates, Cinco Coates, Dr. Stephen Coates, Judge Jay Weatherby, and Bill Davis. 

Open visitation will be held on Sunday, June 27,2021 from 12:00 to 5:00pm at Harper Funeral Home, 2606 Southland Boulevard, San Angelo, TX. Services for Jan will be held on Monday, June 28, 2021 at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church in San Angelo, TX, officiated by Rev. Scott Bradford. Interment will follow at Fairmont Cemetery.
