Why Verizon Is Down in San Angelo and West Texas

SAN ANGELO, TX — A fiber cut knocked out Verizon wireless service Tuesday for thousands of customers across West Texas, including San Angelo, leaving phones stuck in “SOS Only” mode with no calls, texts or data. 

Verizon confirmed the outage in a post on X at 5:59 p.m. Tuesday. “A fiber cut is causing service interruption for customers in the West Texas area,” the company said. “Our engineers are aware of this issue and are working to resolve it quickly.” It directed customers to its network status page for updates and apologized for the inconvenience. 

Affected areas also included Amarillo, Odessa and Midland, according to user reports compiled by DownDetector. The outage peaked at about 5 p.m. with about 2,500 users reporting problems, DownDetector reported. More than 1,600 customers were still without service late Tuesday, most of them in Texas. 

Verizon serves more than 140 million wireless retail connections nationwide. The company said crews were working to restore service but gave no timeline for repairs.
