Sterling City Hires Pustejovsky as New Football Coach, Athletic Director

STERLING CITY, TX — Sterling City ISD named Dale Pustejovsky on Monday as its new head football coach and athletic director.

Pustejovsky, who worked the last few years as an assistant at Blackwell, was previously the head football coach and AD at Buena Vista from 2018 to 2022, where he compiled a record of 23-29.

Pustejovsky has also been an assistant at Strawn and Penelope.

His experience in six-man football is important for Sterling City, which is dropping back to the six-man game after spending the last four years in 11-man.

In addition to his coaching experience, Pustejovsky also played six-man football at Abbott, where he graduated in 2001 and led his team to the state quarterfinals. He was a second-team all-state running back and named as a third-team selection to the UIL All-Century Team in 2009.

Pustejovsky is inheriting a Sterling City team that went 1-9 last year in its final season of 11-man.

The Eagles, however, have been a formidable six-man program in recent years. Sterling City went 10-3 and reached the state quarterfinals in its last year of six-man in 2021, and the Eagles won the state title in 2020.

Last month, Sterling City was realigned into a difficult district for the next two school years with Water Valley (a back-to-back state semifinalist), Borden County (a traditional power with five state titles), Grady and Loraine.

Sterling City returns two second-team all-district players from last year — juniors Vance Davis and Wrace Blackwelder.
